Victoria records no local cases for first time in almost a month

Victoria has recorded no new locally-acquired cases of COVID-19 during the last 24 hours.The result marks the first daily period with no new local cases since the latest outbreak, which plunged the state into a snap lockdown for almost two weeks last month.The last time Victoria recorded no new local cases was on July 11.Victoria administered 17,612 vaccine doses and 30,117 test results were received during the last 24 hours.

Yesterday, there were four locally-acquired cases in Victoria, all in quarantine for their entire infectious period.Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton had flagged there could be a “long tail” to the state’s latest outbreak with a trickle of cases still to come.”There might be another week or more, of a trickle of cases,” Professor Sutton told the media yesterday.

He said the remaining 3000 identified close contacts still needed to be cleared.Professor Sutton added there would be an extensive review of current restrictions early next week.Earlier this week, Victoria further tightened the border bubble with NSW.Residents in those towns are now only able to enter Victoria without a permit for six essential reasons.They include medical care, compassionate reasons, work, education, playing sport or getting vaccinated.
