Greek Community appoints female Vice President

The new vice president Tammy Iliou speaks to Emily Kazakos on the 3XY Hellenic Drive show.

Last Friday Tammy Iliou spoke on the show about how more women are showing interest lately to be involved in key committee positions in the Greek Com-munity.

This is positive news to hear that the focus is getting stronger in getting more women involved so as to reach a 50% participation ratio in the GCM Board.

Tammy Iliou, has been a member of the GCM Board since 2010 as a very young lady. She has a family with two young children Atticus and Yana who speak amazing Greek and is also Co Chair of the Anti-podes Lonsdale St Greek Festival since 2010. The first female co-chair of this Festival now in its 32nd year.
She spoke about the challenges, long hours and hard work in being involved but she has the passion and the perseverance to continue on!

She also mentioned Voula Kallianis, Angela Georgalis, VassoZangalis, the other women Directors who also are continuing on. She also, mentioned the recently elected Director for the first time Georgina Pattas, the last and youngest female.

Prior to the GCM committee elections the above mentioned women spoke individually to the Hellenic Drive show.

Voula Kallianis, now Assistant Secretary, has a Masters of Social Work and working in the field of palliative care and also doing seasonal teaching at Melbourne university. She knows all about our aging first generation! She highlighted “The dreams, the hopes and the stories which should be passed on and never forgotten”.

She also mentions how important it is for her to be encouraged and supported in her new position, by her husband George Kallianis (past committee member).

Vasso Zagali, GCM Board Member since 2006 ongoing. Previous term Assistant Secretary

  • Co OHS Advisor of the Antipodes Lonsdale St Greek Festival since 2014. Allot to continue offering with all her experience and involvement as a. Board Member Victorian Ethnic Communities Council –

Junior member and Convener and coordinator of the 3zzz greek youth committee.

Angela Georgalis, with a double degree in Commerce and Law from Monash University, and currently a practicing solicitor and working in the area of construction law.

She is very enthusiastic to continue on GOCMV board since 2016 when she was first elected and currently the youngest current serving board member (who also happens to be female). She is also currently a School Council member at Alphington Grammar School (also the youngest council member).

Georgina Pattas, the last and youngest female candidate!
A 22 year old of third generation Greek heritage on her 5th year studying Arts/Law (Honours) at Monash University.

She stated on Hellenic Drive that she aspires to one day be a role model and empower young people like herself, who have a voice and similarly aspire to contribute to Melbourne’s Greek community.
The Greek Media Group would like to congratulate all women for their success!

It was also a pleasure to have Tammy’s daughter on the Hellenic Drive, for the first time on 3xy radio.
She is only a junior and she also was inspired by the whole conversation, took her stance and declared that she wants to become a teacher

“Just like you Emily!” Tammy added.
It so happens that I was a young Greek language teacher for the Greek Community at Manningham Primary School in the 80’s when Tammy was a student at the time.

It is an amazing thing for all of us to have this connection from the past which inspires us to move for ward into the future, as a united Greek Australian<<παροικια>>.
